Karaoke room made of plastic or glass?
Hey everyone! I am planning to build karaoke rooms with all the walls made of plastic/glass for legal problems. But the thing is, i have no idea whether the plastic or glass wall will actually be a good insulator of sound. And also, is the tv reflection going to be reflected from the glass making the whole plastic/glass room having reflections from the tv? Really troubled :S HELP!
Glass and plastic can both work, but you will need to do multiple layers with air, inert gas, or even better vacuum between. The actual wall will resonate and transmit the sound unless multiple layers are used. Search recording studio windows to see how the glass viewing windows in sound studios are constructed. They allow viewing while not allowing sound transmissions in either direction.Also check the sites dealing in noise dampened house windows. I was required to install them in my new house (county regulation for noise abatement) because of my proximity to an Air Force Base runway. The windows are basically the same as "thermal" windows.
The reflection is only a problem if the angle of the screen creates a mirroring effect on the glass/plastic. Optically pure glass does not have this problem, while some cheaper glass does. This leads me to think that the impurities in some glass are the actual culprits. As an example, look at how easily an automotive windshield shows reflections. This is due to the high lead content of the glass for strength and the other "impurities" added to conform to safety glass requirements. I use glass in my examples, but plastics are slowly replacing glass in most areas. The "windshield" better known as the canopy on a jet fighter is made of plastic. It is stronger than glass, while being lighter weight. It is also so optically pure that you can look out through even a curved section and not see much if any distortion nor reflection.
