Most chain opticals that sell Oakley also use Oakley lenses, which are made to your prescription, then coated using the Oakley coatings. They are very expensive.

Some private practice eye docs also participate in Eye Med (we do). They have more freedom in choice of prescription labs. The lab that I use does "oakley style" lenses (curved, neat coatings) for a fraction of the cost of oakley lenses. The quality is just as good, though.

These lenses will still cost you more than "standard" sunglass lenses, and you won't find them everywhere. Sometimes it pays to price shop.

Lenscrafters I have found to be extremely expensive, and I have found the staff to be slightly rude, and not so knowledgeable.
I have 4 people in my house who wear glasses, and found a great private eye doctor who carries top of the line frames for much less than Lenscrafters.
My son picked Timberland frames, my partner wears Fendi, my little guy and myself both wear Marchon airlock 2 frames.
We have vision insurance thank God, but Lenscrafters was twice as much as the eye doctor we chose.
I would shop around a bit if I were you.
For 4 people, frames, lenses, tint, glare proofing, exam etc. it all came to 620.00 after insurance. Not bad for name brand frames.
Your insurance should be able to give you a listing of doctors, and what is covered, and what line of frames they carry.

Hi there.

Lenses are generally quite expensive, yes.

More so in US than in other places of the world.

However, you should know that there is a great variety of lenses.
So, next time you go the store, ask the person to explain to you what are alternatives to the lenses they initially prescribed to you.
Very often, they will just offer you the most expensive deal. They are sellers after all and want to make sure to get the most out of your pocket.

My experience with eyeglasses is that you should go with the best lenses you can.
The price of the lens depends ultimately on the level of your prescription (ex. -2) and then the prices goes up as you wish to put certain filters on the lens.
Those filters are usually UV filter (get it, it protects your eyes from bad UV light from sun) and anti-reflexive layer (get it too, especially if you work at a computer a lot during the day).
Even if it seems a lot, don`t forget that it`s your eyes you are looking to protect.
And you only have one pair of them.
It is an investment, rather than just an expenditure.

As for the frames goes...
There are simply so many options; from different brands, colors, materials (plastic, titanium, metal).
I think this is where you can find a better alternative in saving money, then with lenses.
Make sure that you go to more places to look for frames than just the first Lenscrafters store you stumbled upon.

Price of 490$, with Oakley frames, sounds just too much.

Currently, I have a pair that I paid 500$.
But these eyeglasses are the best you can get on the market, hence the high price.
And the quality is almost impeccable.

For Oakley`s, I don`t think it`s worth it.

But if that`s what you really like, then go for it!

You`ll be wearing them quite often I assume, unless they are just for reading, so it is imperative that you feel comfortable wearing that pair.
It`s all about what you like!

I hope this was helpful!
